One World Trust has issued two briefing papers on CSO development effectiveness and sector-level accountability.
Numerous CSOs around the world are currently convening in order to discuss how to achieve development effectiveness and how to ensure that the principles and standards associated with this term are widely applied by the sector. In the last few years, several initiatives at the national and international level have been embarked upon by CSOs around the world. Although the majority of these initiatives are in the initial stages, and results can vary across the board, important lessons can be learned from them.
In order to contribute to these efforts, One World Trust, a London-based think tank, has recently published two briefing papers on CSO development effectiveness and accountability initiatives. The paper “Responding to development effectiveness in the global South”, in collaboration with World Vision, identifies some of the common principles featured in the initiatives of southern-based CSOs, the key characteristics of their institutional design, and some of the specific drivers and challenges behind organisations’ efforts. This paper complements a previous paper which focused on initiatives led by international and northern-based organisations.
The second briefing paper, “Ensuring credibility and Effectiveness: Designing Compliance Systems in CSO Self-regulation” further contributes to the debate surrounding these issues by exploring the different approaches that CSOs have taken in order to address compliance, the benefits and challenges associated with different compliance arrangements, and the factors which shape their adoption.
