The 8 Istanbul Principles for CSO Development Effectiveness can be used in a variety of ways, in the national, regional and international contexts. On this page, you will find an expanding list of tools and best practice examples supplementing the ones included in the IMPLEMENTATION TOOLKIT. You will find initiatives corresponding to each Principle, and you will also see some that address several Principels at once.

MORE EXEMPLES BASED ON CROSS-CUTTING THEMES:

Many initiatives and organizations - mentioned above and others - do valuable work relating to more than one Istanbul Principles, reflecting the unified nature of the Principles and our collective vision of development:

  • AFIMA (Association of Women Engineers of Mali): Promotes gender equality - using the Malian women’s know-how - while incorporating the environmental dimension in their activities, with outcomes such as alternative cooking to reduce the emissions of coal. It refers to Principles 2 and 4.
  • BOND: The work on an Improve It Framework is ongoing - the resulting tool will enable NGOs to assess, manage and report their effectiveness confidently and consistently across eight thematic areas and five ways of working. It is related to all Istanbul Principles and most specifically 3 and 5. See also BOND’s Organisatonal Health Check.
  • FoRS: The Czech National Platform developed a Code on Effectiveness based on Istanbul Principles 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7.

PERSONALIZING THE ISTANBUL PRINCIPLES

  • International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC): Trade Union Development Effectiveness Profile (TUDEP) - a learning tool meant to support trade unions worldwide in the application of the principles in their everyday development cooperation practice. It is based on a questionnaire that is automatically evaluated and analysed in an active excel document.
