CIVICUS World Assembly (5‐7 September 2012, Montreal, Canada)

The annual CIVICUS World Assembly took place on the 5th to the 7th of September 2012 in Montreal, Canada. The event gathered hundreds of civil society participants from across the world around the topic: ACTING TOGETHER FOR A JUST WORLD: Defining a new social contract – making the future together.

Open Forum stand

Like in 2011, Open Forum hosted a stand to inform about our key acitivites and resources on CSO Development Effectiveness throughout the 3-day event. This year, the International Framework for CSO Development Effectiveness was supplemented by 2 important references to guide CSOs in putting the global standards into practice - the Impelmentation and Advocacy Toolkits.

Open Forum and CIVICUS workshop

In addition, on the 6th of September, Open Forum and CIVICUS co-organized the workshop titled “ Making Development Work: Civil society and the global Development Effectiveness agenda ”.

Launch of the Istanbul Principles icons

The Ontario Council for International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Canadian Council for International Co-operation and Open Forum, used the Open Forum and CIVICUS workshop for the official global launch of the icons that will come to represent the Istanbul Principles for CSO Development Effectiveness.

CSO statements on UN DCF

Convened every 2 years, the United Nations Development Cooperation Forum (DCF) is a multi-stakeholder platform that enables all development actors - including civil society - to voice their priorities and influence political action and realities of international development cooperation.

Achieving sustainable development is a key theme at the DCF this year.

A dedicated task force is coordinating civil society participation and confirmed side events run by CSOs on Human Rights-Based Approach, Gender, and the post MDGs agenda.

Rio+20 Conference (20‐22 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, is a hugely important opportunity for global civil society to make sure that the voices of the poor and marginalized are included in decisions that affects them the most. Many CSOs have been engaging through the Major Groups represented at Rio+20 but also through networks such as Beyond 2015, regional consultation statements, and online voting. In addition, the Peoples Summit running alongside Rio+20 released a broad call for mobilization to civil society colleagues worldwide, to enable all groups to contribute their voice even at a distance.

Istanbul Principles flyer for Rio+20

The Flyer presents the 8 Istanbul Principles and the international mobilazation behind them, highlighting the collective CSO vision of how development should work for the people in the long term - including Principle 4: Environmental Sustainability.

We invite you to circulate the flyer widely to your network, in particular those attending Rio+20 and adjacent events.

Online voting

Everybody is also invited to vote on solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges to be presented at the high level segment of Rio+20 through vote.riodialogues.org.

Peoples Summit for Social and Environmental Justice: 15-23 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Peoples Summit will see civil society groups from all over the world voice their vision of a new way of living on the planet - against commodification of life and in defense of the commons.

Acknowledging that not everyone will be able to attend in Rio, and to give common visibility to all groups that share the critics, analysis and proposal of the and want to make their voices heard, organizers call civil society worldwide to communicate their mobilization actions. Indeed, many organizations, communities and networks are holding demonstrations, actions, conferences, debates, etc., in conjunction with the 20th of June (Global Action Day called by the Peoples Summit) or other occasions.

To contribute your voice:

• An interactive map is available on the Peoples Summit website, giving an overview of all the mobilizations going on in the world. To include your activity on the map, please fill in this form.

• Spread the mobilization call as widely as possible

• Send a short mobilization call video for the Global Day of Action on the 20th of June (around 1min). Please see Terms of reference.

• Send other videos, images, or any other mobilization tool.
