UN Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Assembly and of Association

In the task of promoting an enabling environment, civil society is joined by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Assembly and of Association Maina Kiai. Mr Kiai took a very active part in the Busan Global Civil Society Forum just before the multi-stakeholder negotiations and repeatedly highlighted the importance of the freedom for people to organize themselves and participate in development, as well as the many hurdles that they currently face.

Maina Kiai has now launched a survey to identify best practices in promoting freedom of assembly and of association to which all civil society organizations are invited to contribute. The questionnaire has also been shared with UN Member States, National Human Rights Institutions and regional human rights mechanisms. Your identity can remain confidential (only the country where you operate will be disclosed). The answers will later be made public on the website of Mr Kiai and support his thematic report to elaborate a framework on best practices in promoting and protecting civic rights, in accordance with UN Human Rights Council resolution 15/21.
